UK Supermarket Chain Bans Aspartame From Own-Label Products; Japanese Manufacturer Ajinomoto Sues! Can this company be so stupid? World’s largest manufactuer of two neurotoxic carcinogens, Aspartame & MSG, should accept responsibility for causing spike in Neurodegenerative Illnesses: Tumors, MS, ALS, Migraines, Seizures, all recognized by USA FDA

Such a move was not going to go unnoticed by aspartame’s manufacturers, of course. It turns out the Ajinomoto, the Japanese company that makes aspartame, has served a writ in London against Asda, and is suing on the basis that Asda has suggested that aspartame is unhealthy and is something that consumers concerned for their health should avoid.

An Ajinomoto spokesperson is quoted as saying: “This is a UK initiative and a relatively cynical one,” adding: “It doesn’t reflect concerns at a consumer level—it is just bandwagoning.” However, an Asda spokesperson maintains that: “We have removed some of the ingredients our customers tell us they don’t want in their food. That includes aspartame.”

So, what we have here is an example of where what seems to be well-guided consumer pressure has led to a major supermarket chain to take action over a very dubious food ingredient indeed. This, I think, is an example of people power, and I am, personally, hugely enthusiastic about this turn of events.

Now that a writ has been served, my hope is that Asda does not capitulate and “do a deal” with Ajinomoto. Ajinomoto’s lawyers are notorious aggressive. (I’ve had personal experience of this myself as I’ve had exchanges with over what I believe to be factually correct and utterly defensible comments in the Observer magazine some years ago). However, now that a writ has been served, my suspicion is any attempts for a deal to be done have failed. So, it looks as though we’re heading for a full-blown battle.

As this plays out, it might be that Asda’s lawyers may want to draw attention to aspartame’s checkered political history, the fact that this substance has been continually mired in controversy, and that there is (whatever its manufacturer maintains) more than enough evidence to view this substance with considerable suspicion. It might be, therefore, that this legal action will only serve to sow further seeds of doubt about the safety and legitimacy of aspartame. While Ajinomoto obviously feels the need to defend its product and no doubt will instruct its lawyers to give Asda both barrels, in mounting this action it may well end shooting itself in the foot.

Dr. Josh Green and his Health Committee ‘Defer’ the Bill, Thus Killing the Bill for this Session

Rather than bring this House bill to ban aspartame to a vote in his Health Committee in the Hawaii House, which is what he said he would do only last Friday in the prior meeting of his committee, Chairman Josh Green M.D. today, Wednesday, “deferred at the discretion of the Chair” the bill carried by Rep. Mele Carroll to ban Aspartame. This shoots that particular bill down for this session. There still is a Senate Bill, but with more than 3,000 bills to consider, the Senate Bill to ban aspartame has yet to be scheduled for its hearing.

So much for consumer protection in Hawaii House. It didn’t even come to a vote in the committee, but a few members spoke seriously of putting together a Resolution for this session in Honolulu. Resolutions have no legal “teeth” in them, but they could be strong, as strong as the legislators themselves, like directly asking the FDA Commissioner to rescind the approval of Aspartame immediately, or at least to improve the accuracy of the labeling, and even to ask the Department of Health in Hawaii to take in complaints of patients and families of those who have actually died from aspartame/methanol/diketopiperazine poisoning, and then report back to the Legislature next year.

By then, of course, President Obama will have appointed a new FDA Commissioner, so those who feel strongly should be writing to him and that Arizona chap from. Consumer protection should be part of the agenda and choices in the 2008 Presidential Debates.

If the Resolution crafted by the Hawaii Representatives only asks the usual kind of thing, for the Department of Health to “review the literature,” or some other such pusillanimous mousey feeble intention, this would be a waste of Legislative time and paper, since the Department of Health Director, Dr. Fukino, has already indicated that she is completely in accordance with the phoney FDA approval for aspartame.

Besides, the medical testimony and letters sent to the House Health Committee members include all but one of the top medical experts in the world on the subject of aspartame’s neurodegenerative effects. To me, it seems that the Hawaii DOH is not willing nor capable of doing much more than pulling down corporate-sponsored aspartame information from their corporate websites, which will tell you that this deadly poison is as “harmless as mother’s milk” or “just like salt and pepper,” the kind of jive the corporate lobbyists spout to legislators when their boards of directors begin to get a little worried.

All that will happen really is that more people in Hawaii will drink or consume aspartame and get migraines, brain tumors, Multiple Sclerosis, worse cases of diabetes than were ever imaginable, etc., and Hawaii will just observe an increase the death-by- aspartame body count; a real resolution would set up a repository for victim testimony all year round.

So far, only a few legislators in Hawaii or New Mexico or even Washington D.C. have given these neurotoxic carcinogenic poison manufacturers anything to worry about at all, since most of the legislators don’t seem too worried about anything either (what’s a little neurotoxic carcinogen too worry about, anyway?) or very ambitious about consumer protection ideals in the first place.

I had respectful and sincere high hopes for Dr. Green’s abilities for recognizing the medical realities of this neurotoxin’s effects, since it is found in 7000 food products and even in hundreds of children’s medications, despite it turning into methanol and formaldehyde in the child’s or the adult’s stomach and liver.

Thus, my faith in his medical degree and the fact that he is the only physician in the Legislature were perhaps misplaced. We will see what the Resolution has to say. In the meantime, my advice to Hawaiians and everyone: please protect yourself and your family and quit drinking and consuming products that contain aspartame, even though the manufacturers in Japan, the Board of Directors of Ajinomoto (world’s largest manufacturer of both Aspartame and another neurotoxic food additive, MSG), the Coca Cola distributors, the Wrigley’s Gum Board of Directors, and the people poisoning themselves with more diet sodas, are most certainly very happy and grateful with the work by Josh Green, M.D., Chairman of the Hawaii House Health Committee.

Maybe someday this will dawn on him and the rest of the committee, but for the past, present and near future victims of aspartame poisoning in Hawaii, it will be too late.

Mahalo for sharing so many victims’ stories and physicians’ letters; I particularly appreciate New Mexico Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino writing to the legislators to ask them to move this bill forward, and to not capitulate to corporate lobbyists from Ajinomoto and Coca Cola.

CSPI Warns of Aspartame - But Advocates Sucralose/Splenda

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has warned that aspartame, the artificial sugar substitute in most diet drinks, may cause cancer as reported in a three-year Italian study that found links to lymphomas and leukemias . But the CSPI communication goes on to advocate use of another doubtful sweetener - sucralose - to get off aspartame. Sucralose, also sold under the Splenda brand name, has its own problems of toxicity and is by no means an innocuous replacement for aspartame.

Although the CSPI has - with a delay of several years - come out now with a warning against the use of aspartame, Betty Martini charges that its executive director, Michael Jacobson, should have had the courage to do so long ago. She says the information was available since the time of the aspartame approval through political pressure called in by Donald Rumsfeld, former CEO of aspartame manufacturer Searle and now defense secretary.

Diet soda, which generally is sweetened with aspartame, has been shown to be linked to an increased incidence of obesity by Sharon P. Fowler, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio in a recent study. While Fowler is quick to point out that the link does not prove causation, the facts showed that the more diet drinks a person consumed, the higher was the likelihood of being obese.

Why can’t we encourage people to just overcome their sweet tooth?

Perhaps it would help, but of course there is no money in that. We have the sugar industry, the chemical sweetener manufacturers and the processed foods and drinks industry making sure that does not happen. But people do pay the bill - some with their lives, others with suffering and illness, others simply with obesity, and all of them with their weekly grocery bills, not to talk about hospital costs that hit every one of us. Great system and real great advice by CSPI, which says it is defending consumers…


Additives back in the public spotlight

The FoodProductionDaily and BeverageDaily websites are carrying an article that highlights the growing use of natural ingredients in the UK food and drink industry. While a move towards that is commendable, the article also contains a reference to the removal of aspartame by; Sainsbury’s, Britain’s third biggest supermarket, last month said it would remove artificial flavours and colours, as well as the aspartame sweetener, from its private label soft drinks.”

Unfortunately the article fails to mention that Sainsbury’s is not just removing the aspartame from products but are instead REPLACING IT with an equally controversial sweetener called Sucralose (also known as Splenda). That is not progress. That is not an improvement. That is replacing one problem-causing substance with ANOTHER problem-causing substance. It has taken many years for the world to catch up on aspartame and demand its removal as its associated problems surfaced and got researched and investigated. It will take again many years for people to catch up on Sucralose. So this is nothing more than a reset of the industry to fool the consumer again.


FDA Spins News on Second Cancer Study

Morando Soffritti, an Italian researcher with the Ramazzini Foundation in Bologna is known for his publication of a study that found aspartame, the artificial sweetener consisting of two amino acids and a methanol binding agent, caused multiple cancers in rats. Soffritti was in New York on Monday, 23 April, to accept a prestigious academic award and to talk about a second study his institute is conducting with lower doses of aspartame. Although results have not yet been published, the study appears set to confirm the findings of the first study and the researchers are finding negative health effects even at very low dosages of aspartame, comparable to the intakes of people who are regularly using diet drinks.

In a move designed to head off yet more negative publicity for the toxic sweetener, the FDA issued a press release on Friday - just days before Soffritti’s talk at the Mount Sinai Medical School - re-stating the FDA’s earlier contention that there is “No evidence the sweetener causes cancer”. In this way, the press was induced to carry the FDA’s denial in numerous variations and Soffritti’s talk last Monday was no longer considered “newsworthy”, although there IS a new study in progress and it certainly adds to emerging knowledge about the effects of the artificial sweetener. It is of interest to see PR at work here and one should should note how well the technologies of public communication are being used by Big Pharma and its supposed “regulator”, the FDA. The two, it seems, will soon be joined in an incestuous ‘marriage’, if a recent bill proposed by Senator Kennedy finds the approval of US lawmakers.


British Supermarket Bans Aspartame

Artificial colours and flavours including the controversial sweetener aspartame are being banned by Sainsbury’s. Other supermarkets and manufacturers are expected to bring in similar bans following studies linking the additives to allergies and hyperactivity.

Sainsbury’s is replacing aspartame with sucralose, a low-calorie sweetener made from sugar. It is also removing the widely-used artificial colouring E150d from its cola drinks. E150d also appears in beer and bread. The chemicals will generally be replaced by natural colours and fruit and vegetable extracts, while flavourings will be from named fruits and other natural sources.

The founder of the Hyperactive Children’s Support Group, Sally Bunday, said: “This is fantastic news particularly for our members whose children are affected by the artificial colours used in so many products targeted at youngsters.” Sainsbury’s soft drinks manager, Cathy Port, said: “This is the result of extensive research among customers who told us what they want. We’ve invested a huge amount of time to ensure we get the taste of the new soft drinks exactly right.”

Comment: so they are banning one poison and ADDING A DIFFERENT ONE! A few individuals have commented about this exchange of one controversial substance by another on the UK Daily Mail comments section under their article but such comments were not allowed. Ergo, you are supposed to read this news about the aspartame ban and think it’s a good thing but you evidently aren’t allowed to learn that it is being replaced by something equally controversial.


Aspartame BANNED in the Philippines

Translation : A law promulgated by the Philippine Congress has forbidden the importing and use, in the country, of aspartame, a sweetener that is between 180 to 200 times more potent than sugar, as well as banning distribution of four makes of saccharine, the most important brand names in the country known as: Equal, Nutrasweet, Equal-Measure y Spoonful.[*] According to the said Law aspartame gives rise to a total of 75% of the negative effects reflected in consumers and other users according to the north American administration of food and ailimentation, among others, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and diabetes among others. The ban affects all use of this product in any type of consumable and infringement will carry penalties that go from 9,000 euros to 90,000 euros.

Aspartame/Diet Drinks confirm source of Obesity, Cancer, Malignant Tumor Epidemics

The Cancer Research Center of the European Foundation of Oncology and Environmental Sciences in Bologna, Italy reported this week that a long-term study to evaluate the potential carcinogenic effects of aspartame demonstrates the chemical sweetener induces an increase in lymphomas and leukemia in female rats.” The research will be presented at a September international scientific conference, “Framing the Future in the Light of the Past: Living in a Chemical World.”

Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock M.D. commented: “The new study released in the European Journal of oncology by Morando Soffritti and co-workers should terrify mothers and all those consuming aspartame sweetened products. This was a carefully done study which clearly demonstrated a statistically significant increase in several types of lymphomas and leukemia in rats. Both of these malignancies have increased significantly in this country since the widespread use of aspartame.

“This study confirmed the previous study by Dr. Trocho and co-workers, which also found the formaldehyde breakdown product of aspartame to be damaging to cellular DNA and that this damage was accumulative. The type of damage was a duplicate of that associated with cancers. Along with this most recent study, this means that drinking a single diet cola sweetened with aspartame every day could increase one’s risk of developing a lymphoma or leukemia.

“They also found an increased incidence of malignant brain tumors, even though it was not statistically significant. This does not mean there is no association to brain tumors, since only the animals exposed to aspartame developed the tumors. With children and pregnant women drinking the largest amount of diet colas, this puts their children at the greatest risk of developing one of these horrible diseases. Their study found that even low doses of aspartame could cause these malignancies; yet, the higher the dose, the more cancers that were seen.

“Since aspartame can increase obesity and may even cause the metabolic syndrome that affects 48 million Americans, there is no reason to ever consume this product. At the least it should be immediately banned from all schools.

Dr. Blaylock wrote the Miami Herald to counteract propaganda by the Calorie Control Council, an aspartame front group: “It is known that the amount of toxic phenylalanine reaching the baby is twice as high as that in the mother’s blood because the placenta concentrates the toxin. In addition, numerous metabolic breakdown products of aspartame are known to damage the developing infant’s brain, including methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, diketopiperizine and phenylacetate.

Aspartame has been shown by several studies to damage DNA, which can lead to cancer and degenerative brain disorders later in life. The risk of increased brain tumors in such a child would be enormous. Similar mechanisms of damage would be expected in these with liver disease. Studies on aspartame safety have shown that the product increases tumors throughout numerous organs, especially the brain. It was shown that brain tumor incidence increased over 47 times in animals exposed to aspartame.

“With the public concern over childhood obesity and diabetes few are being told of the overwhelming evidence that early exposure to excitotoxins as found in aspartame consistently produce gross obesity and insulin resistant diabetes, just as we are seeing in our youth. The promoters of aspartame use have been lying from the beginning and continue to use their money and political clout to cover up the real and present dangers of this toxic product. Astonishingly the Miami Herald ignored Dr. Blaylock’s lifesaving cry of alarm. “Clout” in Miami means advertising dollars!

The Division of Clinical Epidemiology of the University of Texas Health Center at San Antonio just reported a study by Sharon Fowler, MPH that reviewed eight years of data confirming a diet soda link to obesity. She said: “Something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity.

An earlier study found weight gain among 78,694 women using artificial sweeteners: Stellman SD, Garfinkel L: “Artificial Sweetener Use and One-Year Weight Change Among Women. Prev Med 1985: 15: 195-202.

Joe Stalin said: “One man’s death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic.” Consider the tragedy of an 8 year old child who consumed aspartame products as told by Dr. H. J. Roberts in his 1038 page magnum work “Aspartame Disease, an Ignored Epidemic”. “In two years she developed marketed swelling of one shoulder which then involved the neck. Her arm almost tripled in size. … Numerous physicians and consultants diagnosed histiocytic leukemia. The patient received large doses of Prednisone. Of particular interest is there was dramatic clinical improvement and virtual normalization of the blood changes when the mother eliminated additives. Prednisone was stopped. The patient subsequently ate several bowls of an aspartame cereal. Marked swelling of the checks developed, coupled with recurrence of the aforementioned features. When aspartame was discontinued, the swelling receded without Prednisone.

“Several months later, the girl was given aspartame chewing gum without the mother’s knowledge. Swelling of her entire body, recurrent enlargement of the liver and spleen, a dramatic increase of bone marrow histiocytes, and severe pain in many joints ensued. Total abstinence from aspartame again affected the disappearance of her symptoms and blood abnormalities within 6 months. At the time of Dr. Roberts last discussion with her mother, the child had minimal enlargement of the liver, and was receiving Prednisone in low doses only intermittently.

“The patient had two sets of head x-rays, three CT scans of the brain, two spinal punctures, four bone marrow studies, two electroencephalograms, two heart monitoring studies, two baraium enemas, and a host of other studies. Her mother estimated the medical costs at $750,000.” [Page 476]

Statistics? Says Dr. Betty Martini: “There are millions of victims like this little girl! Once documented reports like hers were received as field research by medical professionals. That time has long passed. Today her near-murder is just an “anecdote”, a statistic! What unspeakable torture to visit upon an innocent child by these heinous mass poisoners: the chemical sweetener cartel! I’ve sent thousands of case histories to the FDA and could as well be talking to the Egyptian pyramid of Cheops. The price of medical treatment in the USA means most American families are but a single serious illness from financial destruction. The agony, disablement, death and family ruination wrought by aspartame wrecks our land with a trail of devastation exceeding category 5 hurricanes! With incomparably greater cost and pain!”

Continued Dr. Martini, founder of Mission Possible International, a worldwide volunteer force which for 14 years has exposed chemical sweeteners: “How shall we count aspartame atrocities? Our FDA once listed them, named 92 symptoms from more than ten thousand volunteered complaints by American consumers. Their Buchenwald list included four kinds of seizures, blindness, sexual dysfunction, mental destruction and death. Then FDA shut the report window and no longer takes and tabulates reports. I’ve sent them more cases than they listed, but you can’t get the death list now; they deny it existed. Think of FDA simply as the branch office of the pharmaceutical industry inWashington!

Martini states: “There’s a war going on in our schools. A war for their health, their futures, their lives. It’s a covert war, unannounced by the media, unknown by those to be sacrificed or their guardians. Our schools are dope houses. Millions or our children are on Ritalin, et al. Aspartame and toxic MSG is dumped on their lunches. An ever greater list of vaccines is commanded to contaminate their blood. The chemical cartel is insatiable! And what the harvest? Is our kids’ healthier, fitter, better balanced and more secure than we were generations ago? We don’t understand health! Every normal physical condition has become a malady treatable, not curable, only by medication, for life. Dr. Gary Null reported on his 6/5/05 interview with Dr. Peter Rost, Pfizer Marketing VP, who candidly revealed the unbelievable drug company profits: Retail price of 100 Prozac 20mg tablets is $247.47. The active ingredient in ALL these is eleven cents! Jesus spoke of those who devour widows houses. Who could say it better?

“But in some states a minuteman call is going out: Ditch the drugs, void the vending machines packed with poisoned potions.” A school system in Wisconsin set the pace, reported by the Finegold Association, whose mission includes generating awareness of the role of foods and additives in student learning, health and behavior problems. Dr. Martini explained this in a letter to the Alabama Board of Education who recently met July 12 to decide about pop: “Aspartame has been proven to destroy brains, trigger psychiatric and behavioral problems, cause eye disorders (including blindness), addict and trigger brain tumors.”

Betty Peters, of the Alabama Board of Education asked for an amendment to remove all soda pop from Alabama schools, but this was reduced to simply revise the current system and allow diet drinks, this with full knowledge that diet drinks cause more obesity. The vending machine proposal was gutted to appease the soft drink industry. But where was the concern for the children?

Dr. Roberts reviewed the Italian study, concluding: “It’s now incumbent upon researchers of leukemia and lymphoma to inquire about the use of aspartame products routinely in such patients. And it’s also highly relevant, the striking increase of primary brain lymphoma which I reviewed in my books and articles. You are dealing with a unique lymphoma of the brain. which most neurologists had not seen before the availability of aspartame. In view of the unequivocal induction of brain tumors and of leukemia/lymphoma in experimental animals the intent of the Delaney Amendment should be invoked. This justifies aspartame as an imminent public health hazard and should be removed from the market as I’ve emphasized for two decades.

In the “Journal of Advance in Medicine” Vol 4 #4, winter ‘91 article: “Does Aspartame Cause Human Brain Cancer” Dr. Roberts said: “The increasing frequency of primary brain lymphoma of B cell derivation - including reticulum cell sarcoma, microglioma and histolytic lymphoma - also requires explanation because this subset was previously rare. Eby et al reported a nearly threefold rise in its incidence among immunologically normal persons in the l982-l984 SEER data, which they could not explain. Specifically, the rate increased from 2.7 to 7.5 cases per ten million population (p=0.001) in the time periods l973-l975 and l982-l984, respectively. The age-adjusted rise was more striking among women which increased from 4.9 per ten million in l979-l981 to 8.9 per ten million in l982-l984.

Again Dr. Roberts tells us “Hockberg and Miller reported a tripling of incidence of this tumor in non-immunosuppressed persons during the 5 year interval between l980 and l984.”

How was aspartame ever approved by FDA? For 16 years it was rejected. FDA even asked the Department of Justice to prosecute the manufacturer, G.D. Searle Co. for submitting fraudulent test data on aspartame. Two prosecutors were appointed, but the defense lawyers hired both of them and the case expired with the statute of limitations. When the Godfather hires the District Attorney don’t expect a conviction. The Italian study press release says the results demonstrate for the first time aspartame is a carcinogenic agent“As recognized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization, results of long-term bioassays conducted on rodents (rats and mice) are highly predictive of carcinogenic risk for humans. In light of this fact, the results of the CRC/ERF study on aspartame call for urgent reconsideration of regulations governing its use as an artificial sweetener in order to better protect public health, in particular that of children.”

This is the most recent of many projects which confirms aspartame’s toxicity beyond controversy. FDA & Searle have always known aspartame is a Class A Carcinogen. The late FDA toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross, told Congress that aspartame, beyond a shadow of a doubt can produce brain tumors and brain cancer, and violates the Delaney Amendment which forbids anything in food which causes cancer. His last words to Congress: “If the FDA violates its own laws who is left to protect the public?” Ten thousand tombstones show that only a concerned citizenry can achieve save itself from all the 92 symptoms FDA once listed.

To children aspartame is murder. It’s an abortifacient and teratogen; causing abortions, birth defects and retardation. If a live child is born aspartame may have heinously damaged its DNA for generations to come. Our schools are so inundated with problems that today the norm is “abnormal”. Only eradication of this poison will eliminate aspartame’s physical, behavioral, psychiatric maladies and learning disabilities. Yes, indeed, confession is good for the soul. I have personally written you for years about the dangers of aspartame, and still have the letters. I’ve sent you indisputable evidence including the knowledge there is a 1038 page medical text on the toxin, completely documented, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic, www.sunsentpress.com by Dr. H. J. Roberts. I’ve told you about Dr. Ralph Walton’s research he showed on 60 Minutes with Dr. Olney, on scientific peer reviewed studies and funding. 92% of independent, unbiased studies show the problems aspartame causes. Still just like you admitted in this press release you’ve never said anything except it needs more testing. And right again where you say “But has not maintained that the artificial sweetener is harmful, except for some people in whom it causes headaches.” Why, Michael, you had all the evidence years ago and in 1985 wrote your own damning report? You knew the gun was loaded. You’ve received volumes of information over the years not only from me but other Mission Possible activists and the public at large. And you’ve been on our web sites and read the material.

Yet, on Fox News you advocated the public use diet drinks even though a study by Sharon Fowler of the University of Texas proved once for all that obesity is linked to diet drinks. http://www.menstuff.org/issues/byissue/dietsoda.html She used 8 years of data and what was in Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi all these years - aspartame! In fact, you say in the press release below: “Aspartame, also sold as Equal and NutraSweet, is used in Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, and thousands of other foods and is consumed by 200 million people in the United States and around the world” — So I’ll ask you again why you pushed diet drinks on Fox News. I hope they never interview you again. And as far as the diabetic epidemic, you know aspartame can precipitate diabetes, simulates and aggravates diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy, and interacts with insulin. You’ve been told for years and told what physician’s books contained the information. And the reports are on the web sites you’ve been on.

Mission Possible International has been asking for a ban on aspartame for 14 years, and the physicians who are experts like Dr. Roberts long before that. Aren’t you a little late? If you had spoken out when you knew about it over 20 years ago maybe it would not have murdered hundreds of thousands of people or even millions. But now that the Italian study is global news you can’t protect aspartame any longer.

Now you encourage the use of a chlorocarbon poison, Splenda. And with all the publicity about its harmful effects don’t tell me you didn’t know. You couldn’t research the toxin without finding out. And would you encourage it without researching it? Merisant has sued them, even though its the kettle calling the pot black. Both companies mislead the public. I like the fact, you say “industry’s Calorie Control Council”. Yes, the Calorie Control Council is a NutraSweet front group pushing the poison. You’re really fessing up today!

As it says in the first report: “Splenda/sucralose is simply chlorinated sugar; a chlorocarbon. Common chlorocarbon include carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethelene and methylene chloride, all deadly. Chlorine is nature’s Doberman attack dog, a highly excitable, ferocious atomic element employed as a biocide in bleach, disinfectants, insecticide, WW1 poison gas and hydrochloric acid.”

The report continues: “Sucralose is a molecule of sugar chemically manipulated to surrender three hydroxyl groups (hydrogen + oxygen) and replace them with three chlorine atoms. Natural sugar is a hydrocarbon built around 12 carbon atoms. When turned into Splenda it becomes a chlorocarbon, in the family of Chlorodane, Lindane and DDT.”

Why not just say drink up on DDT-Lite!? The report tells us that when chlorine is chemically reacted into carbon-structured organic compounds to make chlorocarbons, the carbon and chlorine atoms bind to each other by mutually sharing electrons in their outer shells. This arrangement adversely affects human metabolism because our mitochondrial and cellular enzyme systems are designed to completely utilize organic molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and other compatible nutrition elements.

“By this process chlorocarbons such as sucralose deliver chlorine directly into our cells through normal metabolization. This makes them effective insecticides and preservatives. Preservatives must kill anything alive to prevent bacterial decomposition.”

“In test animals Splenda produced swollen livers, as do all chlorocarbon poisons, and also calcified the kidneys of test animals in toxicity studies. The brain and nervous system are highly subject to metabolic toxicities and solvency damages by these chemicals. Thus, chlorocarbon poisoning an cause cancer, birth defects, and immune system destruction. These are well known effects of Dioxin and PCBs which are known deadly chlorocarbons.

Remember that aspartame is a chemical hypersensitization agent so when people get off aspartame and on to Splenda they can react. “Our study has shown that aspartame is a multipotential carcinogenic compound whose carcinogenic effects are also evident at a daily dose of 20 milligrams per kilogram of body weight (mg/kg), notably less than the current acceptable daily intake for humans,” the authors write. Currently, the acceptable daily intake for humans is set at 50 mg/kg in the United States and 40 mg/kg in Europe.

Aspartame is the second most widely used artificial sweetener in the world. It is found in more than 6,000 products including carbonated and powdered soft drinks, hot chocolate, chewing gum, candy, desserts, yogurt, and tabletop sweeteners, as well as some pharmaceutical products like vitamins and sugar-free cough drops. More than 200 million people worldwide consume it. The sweetener has been used for more than 30 years, having first been approved by the FDA in 1974. Studies of the carcinogenicity of aspartame performed by its producers have been negative.

An artificial sweetener found in 6,000 types of food, drink and medicines should be banned, an MP urged last night. Politicians were warned of ‘compelling and reliable’ evidence that aspartame can cause cancer. The controversial additive is found in a huge number of popular products such as cola, cereal and chocolate. Roger Williams, a member of the parliamentary select committee on food and the environment and Liberal Democrat MP, said any items containing aspartame should be withdrawn from sale. His comments came after research published by the European Ramazzini Foundation in Italy over the summer linked aspartame to cancer in rats. Leading scientists last night joined Mr Williams in calling for products containing it to be taken off the shelves. “There is strong scientific evidence that the components of aspartame and their metabolites can cause very serious toxic effects on humans,” Mr Williams said. Aspartame is also found in chewing gum, yoghurt, and coffee sweetener. It is consumed on average every day by one in 15 people around the world. Mr Williams told the Commons the additive was potentially ‘far more dangerous’ than Sudan 1, the banned food dye linked to cancer and found in some products in Britain earlier this year. He claimed aspartame was found in ten times more products. A debate on its safety had been repressed since the early 1980s with the help of the sweetener industry’s legal teams, he claimed. In 1996 a review of aspartame research showed every industryfunded study had found the additive safe. However 92 per cent of independent studies identified some problems with its safety.

Mr Williams also told how in 1977 Donald Rumsfeld, the U.S. defence secretary and former head of Searle, the company that discovered the sweetener, publicly stated he would “call in his markers” to win a licence for the product. “The history of aspartame’s approval is littered with examples showing that if key decision makers found against aspartame’s safety, they were discredited or replaced with industry sympathisers, who were recompensed with lucrative jobs,” Mr Williams added. Responding for the Government, Public Health Minister Caroline Flint said an independent review of aspartame had been conducted in 2001. She said the Food Standards Agency advice remained that aspartame is safe for use in food. “I am advised that aspartame does not cause cancer,” she said. But Erik Millstone, professor of science policy at the University of Sussex, remained unconvinced. “There are sufficient grounds for banning aspartame. There are serious problems about how it was approved,” he said. The Italian research, which was published in July, showed disturbing results. The European Ramazzini Foundation study found the incidence of cancer in female rats rose in direct relation to the dose of the sweetener they were given.

“In our experimental conditions, it has been demonstrated, for the first time, that aspartame causes a dose-related statistically significant increase in lymphomas and leukaemias in females at levels very near those to which humans can be exposed,” their report said. The scientists suggested the cancer could be triggered by chemicals created by aspartame as it is broken down in the body. Thousands of food products were withdrawn this year in a recall costing an estimated £100million because of contamination with banned food dye Sudan 1, which has been linked to cancer. In 2002, scientists identified a cancer-causing chemical in a huge range of processed foods. British experts found ’significant levels’ of acrylamide in staples such as potatoes, crisps, crispbreads and breakfast cereals eaten by millions every day. Last year scientists also questioned the safety of Scottish farmed salmon. They claimed it should be eaten no more than three times a year after discovering that the feed used in the fish farms was linked to cancer and birth defects.


New Mexico Begins Legislative Process To Ban Aspartame

Fifteen state senators sponsored a bill to rid New Mexico of what some have called Rumsfeld’s Disease.

A senate bill to rid New Mexico of what has been called “Rumsfeld’s Disease” was introduced Thursday by Sen. Gerald Ortiz y Pino, D-Albuquerque, as 15 other senators from both sides of isle also signed on, supporting legislation to ban the deadly artificial sweetener, aspartame. Linked to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for his efforts in the 1970s for putting the sweetener on the market, New Mexico is the first state to consider banning the artificial additive linked to numerous ill-health affects, including cancer.

If passed, no food containing any amount of the sweetener could be manufactured, sold or delivered in Mew Mexico, beginning July 1.

After the bill was introduced Thursday morning, Sen. Ortiz y Pino, appearing on Greg Szymanski’s radio show, The Investigative Journal, said he needs support from six more senators for passage if the anti-aspartame legislation makes its way for a vote during the short 30-day legislative session. The Albuquerque democrat also said the bill needs to be put on the “governor’s call list” in order for it to be heard, remaining optimistic since Gov. Bill Richardson has expressed strong concern about the health hazards of aspartame in the past. “I decided to introduce this bill, despite strong opposition by lobbyists because it is the right thing to do and many of my constituents feel the artificial sweetener is dangerous,” said Sen. Ortiz y Pino while appearing on The Investigative Journal. “I am very optimistic that the banning of aspartame will be passed into law since 15 senators signed on with me to support the bill. I know of one other who has said he join us, leaving only six more votes to get it passed in the senate if it comes to a vote this session.”

Besides the senate bill, New Mexico’s House of Representatives has also introduced a similar bill, House Bill 202, calling for the same ban on aspartame.

Fox and many others trying to ban aspartame have for years been trying to warn unsuspecting users of the dangers, saying aspartame contains “poisonous and deadly toxins.” Before legislation was introduced, Fox tried to get aspartame banned through the state’s Environmental Improvement Board (EIB), but after pressure from aspartame lobbyists, postponed any action on Fox’s request until July.

Regarding the adverse health affects from aspartame, a recent report from a highly respected international medical team has now linked the toxins in aspartame to lymphomas and leukemias. The report by Morando Soffritti “Aspartame induces lymphomas and leukemias in rats” is in the European Journal of Oncology for July, 2005. Dr. Sofritti is a member of the European Ramazzini Foundation of Oncology and Environmental Sciences Cancer Research Centre in Bologna, Italy.

Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, MD, one of the world’s leading authorities on aspartame neuro toxicity, extensively reviewed the Soffritti report. “This study confirmed the previous study by Dr. Trocho and co-workers (1998), which also found the formaldehyde breakdown product of aspartame to be damaging to cellular DNA and that this damage was cumulative,” said Dr. Blaylock. “The type of damage was a duplicate of that associated with cancers. These two studies strongly indicate that drinking a single diet cola sweetened with aspartame every day could significantly increase one’s risk of developing a lymphoma or leukemia.

“This study should terrify mothers and all those consuming aspartame sweetened products. This was a carefully done study which clearly demonstrated a statistically significant increase in several types of lymphomas and leukemias in rats. Both of these malignancies have increased significantly in this country since the widespread use of aspartame. They also found an increased incidence of malignant brain tumors, even though it was not statistically significant. This does not mean there is no association to brain tumors, since ONLY the animals exposed to aspartame developed the tumors. With children and pregnant women drinking the largest amount of diet colas, this puts their children at the greatest risk of developing one of these horrible diseases. Their found that even lower doses of aspartame could cause these malignancies, yet, the higher the dose, the more cancers that were seen. Since aspartame can increase obesity and may even cause the metabolic syndrome that affects 48 million Americans, there is no reason to ever consume this product. At the least, it should be immediately banned from all schools.”

Aspartame (L-phenylalanine N-L-alpha-aspartyl-1-methyl ester) is an artificial sweetener with widespread applications. Previously published results have shown that among rats receiving aspartame a significant increase of lymphoreticular neoplasms, brain tumours and transitional cell tumours occurred. The aim of our short-term experiment was to investigate the biological effect of aspartame consumption by determining the expressions of key oncogenes and a tumour suppressor gene. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After one week per os administration of various doses of aspartame to CBA/CA female mice, p53, c-myc, Ha-ras gene expression alterations were determined in individual organs. RESULTS: The results showed an increase in gene expressions concerning all the investigated genes especially in organs with a high proliferation rate: lymphoreticular organs, bone-marrow and kidney. CONCLUSION: Aspartame has a biological effect even at the recommended daily maximum dose.

Consumers & Manufacturers Should Switch to Sucralose Pending Thorough Government Safety Tests

The Food and Drug Administration should immediately review the safety of the artificial sweetener aspartame, and possibly ban it, in light of a new study published in the European Journal of Oncology. The study, conducted in Italy, found statistically significant increases in lymphomas and leukemias among female rats given aspartame. The smallest amount of aspartame (20 milligrams per kilogram of body weight) that caused a significant increase in cancer incidence is in the ballpark of what many people consume. The study also found equivocal results regarding brain tumors.

At a minimum, the government should conduct new animal studies of aspartame and encourage consumers and manufacturers that use artificial sweeteners to switch to sucralose, which CSPI considers to be the safest of the several artificial sweeteners on the market.

Aspartame, also sold as Equal and NutraSweet, is used in Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, and thousands of other foods and is consumed by 200 million people in the United States and around the world, according to the industry’s Calorie Control Council.

“The FDA immediately should ask the government’s National Toxicology Program to conduct new animal studies to assess the cancer risk from aspartame. As a precautionary measure, in the several years it would take to design and conduct such studies, the FDA should consider ordering aspartame off the market,” said CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson. “Despite several shortcomings in the new study, one notable plus is that it was designed and conducted independently. Virtually all of the previous research was sponsored by the makers of aspartame.”

(In 1996, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that the FDA repeatedly stopped the National Toxicology Program from conducting lifetime animal tests of aspartame.) The authors of the Italian study call for “urgent re-examination of permissible exposure levels of [aspartame] in both food and beverages, especially to protect children.”

CSPI has long urged that aspartame be better tested, but has not maintained that the artificial sweetener is harmful, except to some people in whom it causes headaches. The California Environmental Protection Agency has also called for further studies on aspartame.

Aspartame can be found on the ingredients list in the following products: Soft drinks, over-the-counter drugs & prescription drugs (very common and listed under “inactive ingredients”), vitamin & herb supplements, yogurt, instant breakfasts, candy, breath mints, cereals, sugar-free chewing gum, cocoa mixes, coffee beverages, instant breakfasts, gelatin desserts, frozen desserts, juice beverages, laxatives, milk drinks, shake mixes, tabletop sweeteners, tea beverages, instant teas and coffees, topping mixes, wine coolers, etc. Eliminate or replace prescription drugs that contain aspartame — the pharmacist can tell you the ingredients of drugs.

Please check labels carefully and compare it against the list of “Sweeteners to Avoid” on page 2 of the Aspartame Poisoning Fact Sheet. Many people make the mistake of not checking labels carefully and continue to poison themselves. (Note: In some countries such as Australia, the word “aspartame” may not appear on the label, but the phrase “Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine” appears instead. In Europe, aspartame may be listed on the label with an E Number of E951). Also, some drug and supplement manufacturers are allowed to avoid listing aspartame on the label if they state the words, “contains phenylalanine”. In addition, many people do not realize that their children may be given aspartame- or other artificial sweetener-containing foods or drugs at school without their knowledge. Talk to the school director and to the local PTA to assure that this does not happen.

Four women who had had Fibromyalgia for years, plus allergies (such as allergic rhinitis and food allergies, for example), found that their Fibromyalgia symptoms were nearly gone within a few months of eliminating from their diets the widely used flavor enhancer MSG (monosodium glutamate) and the artificial sweetener aspartame. MSG and aspartame do not cause Fibromyalgia, explains a researcher, nor does eliminating those items work for patients who do not suffer from allergies. The truth about aspartame’s toxicity is far different than what the NutraSweet Company would have you readers believe. In February of 1994, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the listing of adverse reactions reported to the FDA (DHHS 1994).

Aspartame accounted for more than 75% of all adverse reactions reported to the FDA’s Adverse Reaction Monitoring System (ARMS).

By the FDA’s own admission fewer then ONE PERCENT of those who have problems with something they consume ever report it to the FDA. This balloons the almost 10,000 complaints they once had to around a million.

However, the FDA has a record keeping problem (they never did respond to the certified letter from the webmaster of this site… a major victim!) and they tend to discourage or even misdirect complaints, at least on aspartame.

The fact remains, though, that MOST victims don’t have a clue that aspartame may be the cause of their many problems! Many reactions to aspartame were very serious including seizures and death.

“Pro” aspartame people point to industry sponsored short term tests, ignoring independant tests. They point to “reliable” health sites, organizations, foundations etc. that are sponsored, funded & fed “facts” by companies that profit from aspartame. And of course, the FDA approved it so “it must be safe”, neglecting to mention that the FDA denied aspartame approval for over 8 years until the newly appointed FDA commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes overruled the final scientic review panel, approved aspartame, and then went to work for G.D. Searle’s (initial owner of aspartame) public relations firm at $1,000 a day. Hayes has refused all interviews to discuss his actions. The FDA also urged Congress to prosecute G.D. Searle for “specific false statements or concealed facts” stemming from Searle’s testing of aspartame. However, the 2 government lawyers assigned to the case decided against prosecuting G.D. Searle and then joined G.D. Searle’s law firm! Even the National Soft Drink Assn. filed a strong protest letter (available below) in 1983 against the approval of aspartame for use in beverages, saying “aspartame is inherently, markedly and uniquely unstable in aqueous media.” Also, the FDA still allows hydrogenated oils to be used, does that make them safe?

FDA officials have for years resisted proposals from government scientists for comprehensive studies of the safety of the artificial sweetener aspartame. FDA officials said that, since 1981, about 8,000 consumers have complained to the agency that the sweetener has caused them physical ailments.

Huff says that the number of reports is worrisome, though, because “if 100 people have a headache after chewing NutraSweet gum, only one’s going to report it. In 1976, the FDA’s general counsel requested a federal grand jury investigation of the company because of alleged irregularities in its laboratory but such an investigation was never undertaken.”

The study by C. Trocho et al, sometimes referred to as the “Barcelona report”, or the “Barcelona study”, because it was conducted by the staff of the Biology Department of the University of Barcelona, clearly shows that aspartame which was labeled with carbon 14 isotope was transformed into formaldehyde in the bodies of the living specimens and that when they were examined later, the radioactive tagged formaldehyde was spread throughout the vital organs of their bodies.

This conclusively proves that aspartame does indeed convert to formaldehyde in the bodies of aspartame consumers, and that many of the symptoms reported by victims of aspartame toxicity are indeed those associated with the poisonous and cumulative effects of formaldehyde.
